Pagoda Court
Pagoda Court is located in the Shanzhou Scenic Spot in the western suburbs of Sanmenxia City, it is a cultural relic built based on the Baolun Pagoda in Sanmenxia, Henan. It is also commonly known as “Frog Pagoda”.
Baolun refers to the flying god of the Falun in ancient Indian mythology. It is called the "Roller King". He is invincible and is good at conquering water demon, the “three saints of the West”, also known as "the three saints of Huayan", refers to the Buddha, the Manjushri and the Samantabhadra; Buddhist relics are the remains of the eminent monk . Therefore, it’s said that there is a great possibility that the remains of the Buddha would be buried in the underground palace of Baolun Pagoda.
Baolun Pagoda was originally a temple tower in the Shanzhou city. It was built for the eminant monk named “Dao Xiu”in Tang Dynasty. In AD1177, the monk“Zhi Xiu” reconstructed the pagoda more than 800 years ago. Although the temple has been destroyed early, the tower is still standing.
The pagoda gate is facing in the south , and the graphic design is square. The whole pagoda is a 13-level stacked brick tower with a height of 26.5 meters and its circumference is 21.6 meters. There existed foundations and pedestals at the bottom of the pagoda. The front of it is engraved with the inscription "Three Saints Relic Pagoda". The height of each layer for the pagoda is evenly decreasing. The outer contour is parabolic. Its outside is made of marble cubes and stacked bricks, which is very grand. Each layer of the pagoda has a semi-circular arch vouchers and window holes, and there are some iron bells under each wing angle of the pagoda.When the wind is blowing the bells will ring pleasantly. The ventricles and stairways in the pagoda can take the visitors to have an overview of the magnificent Yellow River.
As the typical tower built in Tang Dynasty, The internal structure of Baolun Pagoda inherits the tower-building method of Song Tower. It combines the artistic features and structural methods of towers in the Tang and Song Dynasties. The Baolun pagoda is classically elegant with solid structure and special tower shape , although after 16 times of earthquakes, including 4 times of destructive earthquakes, the Baolun pagoda is still basically intact.
The Baolun pagoda is regarded as one of the four existing echo buildings. When the visitors stand besides the Baolun pagoda knocking stones or clapping their hands. The clam-like cry of quack can be heard, The more quicker you clap your hands, the more louder sound you can hear. so the local people just call the Baolun pagoda the nickname “Toad Tower”.
According to the folklore, long time ago,a pair of golden toads lived in the tower, so the sound from Baolun pagoda sounded much louder. Later, one lama smuggled the female, leaving only one male toad,therefore the sound was not as loud as before. In fact, the sound of toads comes from the principle of echo. The Baolun pagoda is listed as the four echo buildings in ancient China, together with the echo wall in Beijing Temple of Heaven, the Yingying pagoda in Pujiu Temple in Shanxi, and the stone lute in big Buddha Temple in Sichuan. But among them, Baolun pagoda is the oldest one in the four echo buildings. In 2001, it was listed as the Listed as the Fifth National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
