As an ancient and magical residential style, Shanzhou Silo-cave is located in Shanzhou District of Sanmenxia City, Henan Province, it is rich in culture and is generally regarded as the only underground ancient dwelling building in China and even the world. It is known as the “Ancient Village under the Horizon and the Living Stone in the History of Folk Dwelling”. It is one of our four unique ancient residential buildings.

The Silo-cave has the characteristics of being sturdy and durable, it’s windproof and soundproof and warm in winter and cool in summer, what’s more, it has great anti-seismic property. In winter the inner temperature of cave dwelling is more than 10 ℃, while in summer it can keep around 20 ℃. So people called it “the natural air conditioning, constant temperature residence”. It is the true portray of the Silo-cave: “Seeing the tree without seeing the village, entering the village without seeing the house, entering the house without seeing the door, hearing the sound without seeing the people" .

The construction of the Silo-cave is divided into four steps, which can be simply summarized as “digging down the pit, drilling holes in the four walls, beautifying and decorating”. The craftsmanship is closely related to the traditional Eight Diagrams and the life of owner, which reflects the great wisdom of the ancients. Today, there also existed over 12,000 Silo-caves in more than 200 villages like this. The well-preserved Silo-caves have more than 300 years history. This mysterious and peculiar residence is very unique both in China and the world. In 2011, the craftsmanship of the Silo-caves was included in the national intangible cultural heritage protection list.

In Shanzhou Silo-cave, the 22 underground courtyards are connected with each other with different themes, which all-round display the historical evolution of Silo-caves and people's life style and folklore skills in Shaanzhou area. Meanwhile, the scenic spot has also retained many undeveloped underground courtyards for tourists to visit, in this way the traditional culture of Silo-cave can be passed down from one generation to generation. 

The folk performance and non-legacy displays with abundant traditional Chinese culture can be seen in the Shanzhou Silo-cave, such as grass printings, Shaanxi paper-cuts, traditional folk arts-singing while self-slamming drums, puppet shows, shadow play, sugar paintings, revolutionary song performances, and Shaanxi featured wedding shows and so on, which are warmly welcomed and favoured by most of tourists.

The Shanzhou Silo-cave Scenic Spot and Tencent computer Co. Ltd. jointly launched the China's first “Internet plus” smart rural tourist area, the internet model is used to help the tourists to visit the Silo-caves, what’s more, the tourists can enjoy the wonderful travel experience of WeChat ticket purchase, scan code entry, voice explanation etc., which make the rural tourism full of local flavor and charming. During the “China Internet Plus” Summit held in June 2016, Sanmenxia Shanzhou Silo-cave won the China's Most Potential Scenic Spot Award and has become the focus of media. 

In order to stimulate the visitors’ playing experience, the scenic spot has set up a special tourism commodity sales area - Bai yiyuan. A lot of antique- style architecture with carved beam paintings assembled here, every household in the streets is placed with crafts, antique calligraphy and paintings, gold, silver and jade making, every work of art is ingenious and exquisite.  

The Shanzhou Silo-cave scenic spot has also introduced Shaanxi Maweiyi Snack Street, which gathers more than 100 kinds of famous snacks in shaanxi, Shanxi and Henan provinces for tourists to enjoy. The Wuxing underground courtyard next to the snack street also provides the “Ten Bowls” cuisines with local unique flavor, which allows visitors to enjoy a carnival on the tip of the tongue while playing.

  In 2017, Shanzhou Lantern Festival was jointly organized by the Shanzhou Silo-cave and the Shanzhou District Government. colourful lights and lanterns were shining all the area, which were so magnificent and beautiful..

In 2018, a new project of glass bridge/overpass with 5D audio-visual effect in Shanzhou Silo-cave was open to the public.  The glass bridge has a total length of 368 meter with a height of 108 meters and a width of 3 meters. The glass bridge deck can withstand 800 kilograms per square meter. Standing on the bridge, tourists can see the Yellow River in the north and the Shanzhou Silo-cave in the south, and feel the unique Shaanxi landscape and the loess folk customs. The glass bridge in Shanzhou Silo-cave has a circular arc design, which is elegant, durable and much safer. The bridge deck is made of high-quality white glass, which is thickened in three layers and has a good perspective effect. 

The Shanzhou Silo-cave Scenic Spot was developed for the protection of the underground courtyard. It based on the Shaanxi landscape and regarded the Silo-cave as the carrier, and mixed the Yellow River culture together as a whole. It integrates many elements such as sightseeing, observing and emulating, academic research and so on. It is known as the folk culture “Grand View Garden”, which has been rated as the national AAAA scenic spot, China's most beautiful leisure village, the first Internet Plus smart rural scenic spot, and the cultural hometown of China's Silo-cave and so on.
